Destille

Destille is the bar that everyone in Heidelberg tells you about, and for good reason: a living tree grows straight through the interior of the building, its trunk rising through the floor and its branches reaching toward the ceiling. It is not a decorative gimmick — the bar was quite literally built around the tree, and the effect is unlike anything you will find in another drinking establishment. Combined with the cosy, dimly lit atmosphere of the Altstadt cellar space, it creates a setting that stays in your memory.

Beyond the tree, Destille functions as a proper neighbourhood bar with a loyal local following. The drinks are simple, well-poured, and priced for the student wallet. Beer dominates the menu, though wine and basic spirits are available. Conversation is the main entertainment — there is no DJ, no dance floor, and no television screen competing for your attention. The bar staff are friendly and unhurried, contributing to an atmosphere that encourages settling in for the evening rather than rushing through a quick drink.

Destille is on Untere Strasse, Heidelberg's main bar lane, and is easy to find on foot from Bismarckplatz or the Marktplatz. It fills quickly on most evenings, particularly on weekends, and the limited seating means early arrival is advisable. No reservations, no cover charge. Cash is the preferred payment method. Open evenings into the late hours.
