Früh am Dom
Bars & Clubs · Cologne
Früh am Dom is arguably the most famous brewhouse in Cologne, located literally in the shadow of the Cologne Cathedral. Since 1904, it has been brewing its own Früh Kölsch, served in the typical 0.2-liter glasses called Stangen. The Köbesse — Cologne's traditional waiters in blue aprons — keep bringing fresh glasses to your table until you place your coaster on top. With over 1500 seats spread across multiple floors, including a beer garden and a historic vaulted cellar, there is room for practically everyone.
The atmosphere is quintessentially Cologne: open, loud, and warm. At the long wooden tables, you quickly end up sitting next to locals, businesspeople, and tourists alike. If you are looking to connect with strangers, this is an easy place to do it — the easygoing Rhineland mentality and the shared Kölsch experience break any ice. The menu offers solid Rhineland comfort food, from Halven Hahn to Himmel un Ääd.
Open daily, often until midnight or later. Prices are surprisingly fair for such a prime location — a Kölsch costs around two euros. It gets especially busy on Friday and Saturday evenings and during Carnival, when the brewhouse turns into a full-blown party zone. The inner courtyard beer garden is a summer highlight with views of the Cathedral. A perfect social entry point for a night out in Cologne.
