Moritzbastei
Bars & Clubs · Leipzig
Moritzbastei is far more than an ordinary bar. Built in the 16th century as part of Leipzig's city fortifications, the vaulted underground complex was excavated and converted into a cultural center by university students during the 1970s through volunteer labor. Among those who pitched in was a young Angela Merkel. Today, Moritzbastei ranks as one of the oldest and most significant student clubs in all of Germany.
The sprawling cellar vaults host an impressively diverse program. Concerts, readings, theater performances, and club nights all find a home within these historic walls. The various rooms and levels create a unique atmosphere where centuries of history meet contemporary culture. In summer, the generous courtyard opens up for drinks under the open sky.
Thanks to its student-oriented roots, prices remain affordable, and the location directly on Augustusplatz could not be more central. Whether you come for an after-work beer, a cultural evening, or a night of dancing inside a genuine Renaissance-era bastion, Moritzbastei belongs on every Leipzig visitor's list.
